Revolver
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Revolver · After Rubber Soul, in early 1966 the Beatles were given, for the first time in years, a long break of three months without obligations. That gave them an unprecedented amount of time to prepare a new album. Because they did not want to play these songs live, they made full use of the studio: double-tracked vocals, tapes running backwards, altered speeds and instruments that did not belong to their live line-up.
Eleanor Rigby has only a string octet as accompaniment and is about loneliness. Love You To brings Hindustani classical music into pop. Tomorrow Never Knows combines a heavy Indian drone with a collage of tape loops. The album was released on 5 August 1966 with Eleanor Rigby and Yellow Submarine on one single. It is regarded as one of the greatest and most innovative albums in pop history, and many critics now think it better than Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
