Rubber Soul

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

Rubber Soul · For the first time the Beatles were allowed to record an album without obligations for concerts, radio or film. Recording at EMI Studios in London began on 12 October 1965 and lasted four weeks. Most of the songs came about after that summer's American tour, where the band met Bob Dylan and heard Motown and Stax on the radio. After A Hard Day's Night it was only the second album with original songs only.

The sound is softer and more varied than before, with influences of pop, soul and folk and with new instruments such as sitar, harmonium and fuzz bass. The lyrics became more mature, especially those of John Lennon. The title refers to the notion of plastic soul, the way the group acknowledged being less authentic than the soul artists they admired. The album received much praise, shifted attention from singles to complete albums and was later regarded as a key work for psychedelia and progressive rock.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) and notice the exotic twang of the sitar among the acoustic guitars: a new instrument in the Beatles' music.
