Help!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Help! is the Beatles' fifth album and the soundtrack of their second film, made by director Richard Lester. Recording began on 15 February 1965 with Ticket to Ride in Studio Two of EMI, after which the group flew to the Bahamas to film. Seven of the fourteen songs are in the film and fill the first side.

In the studio they kept layering multiple tracks on top of one another. On Yesterday a string quartet plays, the first time the group used baroque sounds, and You've Got to Hide Your Love Away has flutes. The record received favourable reviews. In the United States ordinary critics began to see the group as serious artists, and the album was nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year, the first time a rock band was named in that category.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Yesterday and notice the role of the string quartet, and hear how sparse the accompaniment is compared with the rest of the record.
