Seven

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Seven is the seventh studio album by Soft Machine and came out in 1973. Bassist Roy Babbington, who had already played as a session musician on Fourth and Fifth, became a permanent member. He replaced Hugh Hopper, who began a solo career. As a result, more than half of the band now consisted of former members of Nucleus. The line-up also included Karl Jenkins, Mike Ratledge and drummer John Marshall.

The album was released on CBS in the United Kingdom, with a colourful gatefold sleeve, and on Columbia in the United States. The sleeve there shows the numeral 7. The titles of the last two tracks, The German Lesson and The French Lesson, were clearly intended as a joke by the band. It was the last studio album with a number as its title.

Listening tip. Listen to Down the Road and notice how the song ends in a floating jumble of keyboards.
