Hard

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Hard is the fourth studio album by this English post-punk group and was released in 1983 on Warner Bros. It was the first album without the drummer Hugo Burnham; the bassist Dave Allen had already left before the previous album, Songs of the Free. Jon King and Andy Gill remained, with Sara Lee on bass and guest musicians for strings, brass and backing vocals.

The sound shifted from a hard, stomping dance rhythm to a smoother, more heavily arranged pop sound. The New York Times wrote that the band had swapped its sharp dance rock for something closer to traditional disco. For some fans that was a step too far.

Listening tip. Listen to Is It Love and notice the polished production and the backing vocals: how much of the hard post-punk sound is left?
