1983
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
1983 is the debut album of the American electronic producer Steven Ellison, who works under the name Flying Lotus. The album was released on 3 October 2006 on Plug Research and is named after his birth year. Only Laura Darlington sings along, on the last track.
The music mixes influences from jazz harp, Japanese synth-pop, Afro-Cuban rhythms and distorted video game sounds. Critics praised the warm, expressive tone and the funk, although Pitchfork found the record mainly stylish and interchangeable with those of its contemporaries. Later a reviewer saw in 1983 a kind of calling card that set the tone for Ellison's later work. In 2026 an anniversary edition was released on vinyl.
