Mall
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Seven years after the group broke up, the founders Jon King and Andy Gill came together again for Mall, the fifth album, from 1991. It sounds smoothly produced, with plenty of synthesizers and imitation funk rhythms. Gail Ann Dorsey plays bass, and a succession of drummers and backing singers contribute.
The lyrics take the band back to politics. As the title suggests, they keep returning to consumption and the economy. F.M.U.S.A. is an essay on the Vietnam War, built from many samples. Soul Rebel is a cover of the song by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Rolling Stone thought it an adventurous, often compelling album that courts commercial success and yet indicts American consumer culture.
