Motown
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
In 1959 Berry Gordy started a label in Detroit that he organised like a car factory, with regular songwriters, the house band The Funk Brothers and a weekly quality-control meeting. The aim was Black music that white audiences would buy as well: 'The Sound of Young America'. The Supremes scored twelve number 1 hits; in 1972 Motown moved to Los Angeles.
