Philly soul
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Philly soul · In Philadelphia the songwriters and producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff made their own soul from the late 1960s, and in 1971 they founded Philadelphia International Records. In Sigma Sound Studio, the house band MFSB recorded lush soul, with strings, horns and a tight, danceable groove. The O'Jays scored with Love Train (1972), and MFSB's TSOP (1974) became the theme tune of the TV programme Soul Train. The Philly sound became one of the building blocks of disco.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Love Train for the strings and the horns above a groove that keeps rolling.
