Wah-wah pedal

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Wah-wah pedal · In 1966 at the Thomas Organ Company, Brad Plunkett developed a pedal with a filter that you open and close with your foot. As a result, the guitar sounds as if it is saying ‘wah-wah’, like a trumpet with a mute. The pedal was sold under the brands Vox and Cry Baby. Jimi Hendrix made a talking, wailing voice of it. In funk and soul in the early 1970s, guitarists instead played the wah rhythmically, and so it became the sound of blaxploitation films such as Shaft.

Listening

Listening tip. Can you hear the guitar ‘talking’? Notice how the sound opens and closes in time with the rhythm.
