Company
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Company is an American band from Brooklyn, New York, founded in 2001. The members met at Bard College. There they played together in all kinds of punk groups and folk ensembles, and you can hear those two worlds in their music. Company makes songs with a basis in folk and country, but plays them with the energy of punk and psychedelic rock.
Music and breakthrough
In the first years the records mostly stayed in-house. Two studio albums from the early period have never been released, nor has a live album. In 2004 the third album, Hills, was released independently. The fourth, Parallel Time, was released in October 2005 by Brah Records, the label of the band Oneida. The second album on that label, Old Baby, came out in February 2008 and was produced by Kid Millions of Oneida. In those years Company often shared a bill with label-mates such as Oakley Hall, Oneida, Home and Dirty Faces.
Influence
In 2014 the television series The Vampire Diaries used the song Poisonous Spider from the album Over the Mountain. That same year the band released its first LP on its own label Papasan Recordings. Company consists of three songwriters and a drummer, who swap instruments among themselves: guitar, bass, keyboards, violin and harmonica all come by. It is a small band from the American independent scene that went its own way outside the big labels.
