2001

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

With 2001, Dr. Dre returned in November 1999 with his second solo album, after The Chronic from 1992. He had something to prove: the media doubted whether he could still produce. The title changed several times because of a dispute over the name Chronic with Death Row Records. He and Mel-Man produced most of it. The album was conceived like a film, with build-up, moving and aggressive moments. The collaboration with the keyboardist Scott Storch began here. With piano and strings he brought a new colour.

The sound builds on the G-funk of his debut, with sparse beats, ominous strings, soulful vocals and even reggae. Still D.R.E., Forgot About Dre and The Next Episode became singles. Critics praised the production and the tight beats, but often found the lyrics about violence, drugs and sex too crude. Many critics called The Message, a song for his late brother, the best thing the album could have been.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Still D.R.E. and notice the piano motif and the sparse beat: how much space does the production leave open?
