The Chronic

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Chronic was Dr. Dre's first solo album, after he had left N.W.A and Ruthless Records following a dispute over money. It was released in December 1992 on Death Row Records and was recorded in Los Angeles. On twelve of the sixteen songs Snoop Dogg raps, heard widely here for the first time. Daz Dillinger, RBX and Kurupt were also introduced to the public. The lyrics contain jibes at Eazy-E and Ice Cube.

The production samples little, usually one or a few fragments per song. It makes room for heavy synthesizer basses imitating Parliament-Funkadelic, a lone keyboard line and live instruments. The slow, smooth beats are known as G-funk. Nuthin' But A "G" Thang reached number two on the American singles chart. The lyrics caused uproar over sexism and violence. The record is regarded as highly influential and has been added to the National Recording Registry.
