G-funk
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Dr. Dre, a former member of N.W.A., developed G-funk with The Chronic (1992): slow grooves with samples from George Clinton's P-Funk, a high synthesizer line and plenty of space. On California Love, Roger Troutman sings through a talk box. Later Dre chose a sparser sound: Still D.R.E. (1999) revolves around a minimal piano riff by Scott Storch.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Nuthin' but a "G" Thang for the slow funk groove, the high synthesizer line and the relaxed flow of Snoop Dogg. Compare that with the silence around the piano riff in Still D.R.E.
