Scott Storch

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Scott Storch is an American producer and songwriter, born in 1973 on Long Island in New York. He grew up in South Florida and Philadelphia. His mother was a singer. He began his career in 1991 as keyboard player of the hip hop group The Roots and contributed to the albums Organix and Do You Want More?!!!??!. He did not enjoy touring. He preferred to work in the studio and became a producer.

Music and breakthrough

His first big hits were You Got Me by The Roots with Erykah Badu and Eve, and the collaboration with Dr. Dre on Still D.R.E. from 1999. He came up with the piano riff for it and co-wrote the song. In the 2000s he made hits for, among others, 50 Cent, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown, Nas and Snoop Dogg. He had five number ones in the American Hot 100, including Baby Boy by Beyoncé and Candy Shop by 50 Cent. An addiction to cocaine sent his career into decline, and in 2015 he went bankrupt. Since then he has been working again with, among others, DJ Khaled and The Game.

Influence

Storch is known for beats that need very little: a recognisable riff or motif with space around it. In School of Rock he appears in connection with Still D.R.E., where the beat is minimal: a piano riff, drums and otherwise mostly silence.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Still D.R.E. and notice the piano riff that keeps coming back, the drums and the silence between the beats. How little does the beat need to stand out?
