Candy

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Candy is a studio album by the trumpeter Lee Morgan, recorded on 18 November 1957 and 2 February 1958 and released in late 1958 by Blue Note. Morgan plays here in a quartet with the pianist Sonny Clark, the bassist Doug Watkins and the drummer Art Taylor. Alfred Lion produced, Rudy Van Gelder recorded it and Reid Miles designed the cover.

AllMusic praises Morgan's tone: sweet, with fluid playing and a clear, joyful expression. He would later become an excellent songwriter, but on this album tracks such as Since I Fell for You by Buddy Johnson and C.T.A. by Jimmy Heath give him all the room to show what he can do.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Since I Fell for You to the tone of the trumpet and notice how fluidly Morgan plays the melody.
