Lee Morgan
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The trumpeter Lee Morgan, from Philadelphia, was taught as a teenager by Clifford Brown, his great role model. At eighteen he played in Dizzy Gillespie's big band and made his first records for Blue Note. He also played on John Coltrane's Blue Train. From 1958 to 1961 he was the trumpeter of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. His playing was fiery, playful and full of blues phrases. In 1963 he recorded The Sidewinder, whose title track became a kind of jazz dance number; the album was one of Blue Note's best-selling records. In February 1972 he was shot dead between two sets in a New York club by his partner Helen Morgan.
