Art Blakey

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The drummer Art Blakey, from Pittsburgh, played in the 1940s in Billy Eckstine's big band, where Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie also played. In 1954 he recorded A Night at Birdland with the pianist Horace Silver and the trumpeter Clifford Brown. From that collaboration grew the Jazz Messengers, whom Blakey led until his death in 1990. His playing was powerful, with a driving roll on the snare drum and a hi-hat that snaps shut on two and four. The Jazz Messengers was a school for young talent: Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Wynton and Branford Marsalis and many others began there. Moanin' (1958), with the pianist Bobby Timmons, became the band's best-known record.
