The saxophonist Wayne Shorter, from Newark, played in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from 1959 to 1964, where he also became musical director. In his early playing you can hear the influence of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. In 1964 he joined Miles Davis's second quintet, for which he wrote pieces such as E.S.P., Footprints and Nefertiti. For Blue Note he made albums such as Speak No Evil and Juju, with enigmatic melodies and unusual harmonies. In 1970 he founded Weather Report with Joe Zawinul. Later he led an acoustic quartet well into old age. Shorter is regarded as one of the most important composers in jazz.
