Heavy Weather
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Heavy Weather · Weather Report's seventh album was released in 1977 on Columbia. The founders Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter played together with bassist Jaco Pastorius, drummer Alex Acuña and percussionist Manolo Badrena. Zawinul produced and orchestrated, Shorter and Pastorius did additional production. The record opens with Birdland, an instrumental piece that nevertheless became a great success and later a jazz standard.
Teen Town, a composition by Pastorius in which his bass plays the leading role, is regarded as a highlight of the record. Rumba Mamá, with Badrena and Acuña in the foreground, was recorded live at the concert in Montreux in the summer of 1976. Rolling Stone felt that the group had lost space and lightness, but that the new bassist made their music busier and more talkative. The record became the group's most commercially successful album and in 2011 was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
