Jaco Pastorius
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Jaco Pastorius grew up in Florida and played a fretless bass guitar. This allowed him to play gliding notes and made his bass sound singing. He also played harmonics, high overtones. His first album Jaco Pastorius (1976) opens with Charlie Parker's Donna Lee, on bass and percussion alone. From 1976 to 1981 he played in Weather Report and wrote Teen Town, among other pieces. He also worked with Joni Mitchell and Pat Metheny. Pastorius changed the role of the bass guitar in jazz. He suffered from bipolar disorder and died in 1987 after a violent altercation with a bouncer.
