Holiday for Pans

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Holiday for Pans · Between 1980 and 1982, the bassist Jaco Pastorius recorded, in various studios in New York, the material for what was to become his third solo album, after Word of Mouth from 1981. He produced it together with Peter Yianilos. The record is above all a showcase for the steel drums of Othello Molineaux. Wayne Shorter, Don Alias and Toots Thielemans also play, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra provides the orchestration for Mysterious Mountain.

Warner Bros. refused to release the album because it was too esoteric for a label that expected commercial fusion. It includes covers of She's Leaving Home by The Beatles and Giant Steps by John Coltrane, and the title song plays with Holiday for Strings by David Rose. Not until 1993, six years after the bassist's death, was the record released, on the Japanese label Sound Hills. The Penguin Guide to Jazz called it by far the most imaginative project he ever undertook.
