Toots Thielemans

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Toots Thielemans · Jean-Baptiste 'Toots' Thielemans from Brussels began on the accordion and learned to play guitar during the war, inspired by Django Reinhardt. He also played harmonica, and it was on that instrument that he became world-famous. In 1952 he moved to the United States, where he played with George Shearing. His melody Bluesette (1962), which he played whistling along with the guitar, became a hit and a standard. His harmonica can be heard in films such as Midnight Cowboy and in the Sesame Street theme. He played with Quincy Jones, Bill Evans and Jaco Pastorius. He was made a baron by the Belgian king and died in 2016.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the harmonica: singing and melancholy, like a human voice.
