Quincy Jones

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Quincy Jones was born in 1933 in Chicago and grew up in Seattle, where he played the trumpet and learned to arrange. He studied at Berklee in Boston and in 1957 in Paris with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen. His first film score was The Pawnbroker (1964) by Sidney Lumet. Among those that followed were In the Heat of the Night and In Cold Blood (both 1967) and The Italian Job (1969). Jones brought the sound of the big band and of soul to the Hollywood film. In 1968 he was the first African American with two Oscar nominations in a single year. Later he became best known as a producer, notably of Michael Jackson's Thriller and of the film The Color Purple (1985).

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the horn section and the rhythm section from jazz: blues chords, brass stabs and a walking bass give the scenes an urban, modern rhythm.
