Control
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
Control · For years Janet Jackson was under the management of her father Joseph, who guided her first two albums. She then had her marriage to James DeBarge annulled, parted ways with her father as manager and chose John McClain of A&M. He introduced her to the production duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Their collaboration produced a new sound, a blend of rhythm and blues, rap, funk, disco and synthetic percussion, with a striking triplet swing that would later inspire new jack swing. The lyrics are about her own life and about becoming independent.
Control was released in February 1986 and was her breakthrough. It became her first number one on the American album chart. Five singles reached the American top five, including What Have You Done for Me Lately, Nasty and When I Think of You, her first number one. Critics praised the album as an artistic achievement and as a personal statement. It was nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year.
