The Birth of a Band
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Birth of a Band! was released in 1959 on Mercury and shows Quincy Jones as conductor and arranger for a big band. Many well-known soloists play on the record, including Zoot Sims, Clark Terry, Harry Edison and Phil Woods. Besides Jones, Nat Pierce, Al Cohn and Melba Liston also wrote arrangements. Liston also plays trombone herself.
The repertoire is a mixture of original work and well-known jazz pieces. Jones wrote the title track and, with Harry Arnold, A Change of Pace. There are also pieces by Bobby Timmons, Benny Golson, Lester Young and Sonny Stitt, and the old classic Tuxedo Junction. The tracks all last just two to four minutes. The reviewer Scott Yanow later called the record one of Jones's best jazz recordings.
