Go West, Man!
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Go West, Man! is Quincy Jones's second studio album and was released in 1957 on ABC Records. It is a record for a larger ensemble, on which Jones acts as conductor. A group of outstanding jazz musicians play on it, including the trumpeters Conte Candoli, Pete Candoli, Harry Edison and Jack Sheldon. On alto saxophone we hear Benny Carter, Herb Geller, Charlie Mariano and Art Pepper.
The tracks come from other composers and arrangers, such as Jimmy Giuffre, Johnny Mandel, Charlie Mariano and Lennie Niehaus. That gives the record a varied character. The line-up also differs from track to track: the rhythm section alternates between Lou Levy, Carl Perkins, Red Mitchell, Leroy Vinnegar, Shelly Manne and Mel Lewis. In the medley What's New?, each saxophonist gets a solo of his own. Thus Bill Perkins plays in What's New?, Pepper Adams in We'll Be Together Again and Walter Benton in Laura.
