From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Great Wide World of Quincy Jones · The Great Wide World of Quincy Jones came out in 1959 on Mercury. Jones stands as conductor in front of a big band including Art Farmer, Lee Morgan and Phil Woods. The arrangements come from four people: Ernie Wilkins, Al Cohn, Bill Potts and Ralph Burns. Jones himself wrote no tracks for this record.

The repertoire is broad. It includes jazz classics such as Lester Leaps In, Caravan, Cherokee and Air Mail Special, alongside a song by Irving Berlin and I Never Has Seen Snow by Harold Arlen and Truman Capote. Wilkins and Potts also wrote original pieces, such as Ghana and Eesom. Scott Yanow later described the record as a bop-oriented big band of the highest level.
