Smooth jazz
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
In the mid-1970s a softer variant of fusion emerged, which became enormously popular in the 1980s. Smooth jazz borrows from soul and funk: a relaxed groove, warm chords and a melody on saxophone, guitar or electric piano, with a polished production. George Benson and Grover Washington Jr. were well-known names.

Listening tip. In Just the Two of Us, hear the relaxed groove beneath the saxophone and the voice of Bill Withers.
