Kenny G

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Kenny G · Kenneth Gorelick, from Seattle, began playing saxophone as a child; Grover Washington Jr. became his great model. He played in Barry White's band and in Jeff Lorber's group. His album Duotones (1986), with the instrumental Songbird, was a million-selling success. Breathless (1992) became the best-selling instrumental album of all time. His soprano saxophone sounds soft and smooth, with long sustained notes. Jazz musicians and critics criticised him fiercely, especially after he had his saxophone sound over a recording by Louis Armstrong in 1999. Even so, he reached a larger audience than almost any jazz musician.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the long, smooth notes: every note is polished.
