Grover Washington Jr.
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The saxophonist Grover Washington Jr. grew up in Buffalo and later lived in Philadelphia. In the early 1970s he made soul-jazz records with funk grooves for the label Kudu, a division of CTI. Mister Magic (1975) was a great success. On Winelight (1980) is Just the Two of Us, sung by Bill Withers, a worldwide hit. His warm, singing tone on soprano and tenor saxophone became the model for a whole generation of smooth jazz saxophonists, among them Kenny G. He died in 1999, shortly after a television appearance.
