Feels So Good

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Feels So Good is the fifth album by the saxophonist Grover Washington Jr. and was recorded and released in 1975. The producer Creed Taylor worked with the arranger Bob James, who provided the spacious, rich sonic setting. Rudy Van Gelder was the engineer. The record has five pieces, with strings, brass and a strong rhythm section.

The album topped both the soul and the jazz chart and reached tenth place on the pop albums chart. The reviewer Jason Ankeny later called it the creative high point of Washington's electric funk sound. According to him, the record shows that smooth jazz is more than background music. He also lauded the bassist Louis Johnson, who in It Feels So Good and Hydra drives the bottom end of the music while the soprano sax floats above.
