Hydra
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Hydra is Toto's second album and was released in 1979. After the success of the debut, the band did not want to make the same record again and tried something different. Guitarist Steve Lukather later felt that the album may have been made a little hastily. The production was by the band themselves, together with Tom Knox and Reggie Fisher. In 1980, CBS had a video of four songs filmed, for which a New York sewer was built, as also seen on the cover.
The song 99, inspired by the 1971 science-fiction film THX 1138, reached number 26 on the American Hot 100 and was the biggest hit. The record was a commercial success, but far less popular than the debut. Cashbox called it more adventurous than the first album, with excursions into progressive rock. Billboard praised Lukather's guitar playing as breathtaking.
