Turn Back

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Turn Back · For their third album, Toto wanted to become an arena rock band with a heavier sound. They worked with Geoff Workman, who had previously worked with Queen. Guitarist Steve Lukather said that Workman gave the album a new sound with almost no midrange. The album was released in January 1981.

Goodbye Elenore became the band's first Japanese hit. Live for Today was the first Toto song that Lukather wrote. In the United States the record disappointed: its highest position was number 41, there were no hits and the band did not tour with it. Columbia threatened to terminate the contract if there was no hit. It came in 1982 with Toto IV. Today Turn Back is a cult favourite among fans.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Live for Today, the first song from Lukather's hand, and notice how solidly it rocks.
