George Benson

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The guitarist and singer George Benson from Pittsburgh played as a young musician in Jack McDuff's organ trio and recorded with Miles Davis in 1968. He named Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery as his models on the guitar. In 1976 he released Breezin', with the vocal hit This Masquerade; the album reached the top of the American albums chart and helped get smooth jazz going. Benson often sings in unison with his own guitar solo. Give Me the Night (1980), produced by Quincy Jones, was a big pop and R&B success.
