Shape of Things to Come
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Shape of Things to Come · After four years and three different labels, George Benson signed with A&M/CTI in 1968. He had to take the place of Wes Montgomery, the label's star, who had died earlier that year. For this first album, producer Creed Taylor brought in all of the label's heavyweights: the arranger Don Sebesky, the engineer Rudy Van Gelder and guests such as Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter.
It is Benson's fifth studio album and the first that Taylor produced. He would continue to do so until 1976. The repertoire consists largely of covers of artists as different as Aretha Franklin, the Monkees and Glenn Miller. In addition there are two originals and arrangements of film music.
