Glenn Miller

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The trombonist and arranger Glenn Miller worked in the 1920s and 1930s in the orchestras of Ben Pollack and the Dorsey Brothers, among others. In 1938 he started a big band of his own with a recognisable sound: a clarinet playing the melody above four saxophones. Between 1939 and 1942 he had a string of enormous hits, such as Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood and Chattanooga Choo Choo, the first record to sell a million copies. In 1942 he joined the army and led an orchestra that entertained the Allied troops. In December 1944 his plane disappeared over the Channel. His music became a symbol of the war years and the Liberation.
