Herbie Hancock

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Herbie Hancock, from Chicago, played a Mozart concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of eleven. In jazz he named Bill Evans as an important influence on his harmony. His first album Takin' Off (1962) contained Watermelon Man, which became a hit. From 1963 to 1968 he played in Miles Davis's second quintet. For Blue Note he recorded Maiden Voyage, a modal album about the sea. In the 1970s he went electric: Head Hunters (1973) brought jazz and funk together. In 1983 he had a hit with Rockit, with scratches by a DJ. Hancock kept on using new technology.
