Takin’ Off

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Takin’ Off · Takin' Off is Herbie Hancock's debut album, released in 1962 on Blue Note. Hancock plays piano with the tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, the trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, the bassist Butch Warren and the drummer Billy Higgins. All the tracks are his own. The record is a fine example of hard bop.

The bluesy Watermelon Man almost reached the top hundred of the singles charts and became a jazz standard. In 1973 Hancock made a funk version of it on Head Hunters. The record appeared on CD for the first time in 1996 and was reissued in 2007, remastered by Rudy Van Gelder.
