Dexter Gordon

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, from Los Angeles, played in the 1940s in the bands of Lionel Hampton and Billy Eckstine. He combined the light tone of Lester Young with the language of bebop and himself became a model for Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. After years of drug problems he made Go and A Swingin' Affair for Blue Note in 1962. After that he lived for almost fifteen years in Copenhagen, from where he played widely in Europe, including in the Netherlands. In 1976 he returned to New York. In 1986 he played the lead role in Bertrand Tavernier's film Round Midnight, which earned him an Oscar nomination.
