A Swingin’ Affair!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Swingin’ Affair! · A Swingin' Affair is an album by the saxophonist Dexter Gordon, recorded on 29 August 1962 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. It was recorded two days after Go, with the same line-up: the pianist Sonny Clark, the bassist Butch Warren and the drummer Billy Higgins. Even so, the album lay on the shelf for two years and was released only in early October 1964 on Blue Note.

Of the six pieces, three are standards. Two were written by the saxophonist himself and one came from Warren. The Penguin Guide to Jazz picked You Stepped Out of a Dream as the highlight, but called the session not entirely gripping.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to You Stepped Out of a Dream and notice how the tenor saxophone plays the melody and how the rhythm section swings beneath it.
