Doin’ Allright

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Doin’ Allright · Dexter Gordon recorded Doin' Allright for Blue Note in 1961. It was his first record for that label. Gordon plays tenor saxophone in a quintet with the trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, the pianist Horace Parlan, the bassist George Tucker and the drummer Al Harewood. The CD contains two extra tracks: I Want More and an alternate take of For Regulars Only. At just over twelve minutes, Society Red is the longest piece.

In the 1950s Gordon was largely forgotten. The title therefore suits the moment well: here the saxophonist made the first of three successful comebacks. AllMusic gave the album four stars and saw in the Blue Note recordings the occasion for his rediscovery.

Listening

Listening tip. In Society Red, listen to the interplay of tenor saxophone and trumpet and notice how the rhythm section carries the piece.
