Daddy Plays the Horn
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Daddy Plays the Horn is a 1955 jazz album by the tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon. He plays in a quartet with the pianist Kenny Drew, the bassist Leroy Vinnegar and the drummer Lawrence Marable. The programme consists of six pieces, two of them by Gordon himself: the title song and Number Four. The quartet also plays Confirmation by Charlie Parker, the ballads Darn That Dream and Autumn in New York, and You Can Depend on Me.
Billboard found the album not particularly original, but swinging. The magazine heard in Gordon's playing a firm sound, inspired by Lester Young. The Penguin Guide to Jazz gave it three of four stars and named Confirmation and Autumn in New York as the main reasons to buy the record. The playing of Drew and Vinnegar was also praised.
