Lionel Hampton

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Lionel Hampton began as a drummer and became the first great jazz soloist on the vibraphone, a metal percussion instrument with shimmering tones. In 1930 he already played vibraphone on a Louis Armstrong record in Los Angeles. Benny Goodman heard him in 1936 and took him into his quartet. From 1940 Hampton led a big band of his own, which had a hit with Flying Home (1942). Illinois Jacquet's tenor sax solo on that record became a model for rhythm and blues. Hampton's band was loud and rousing and lasted for decades; many young musicians, including Dinah Washington and Quincy Jones, got their start in it.
