Lionel Hampton

Lionel Hampton begon als drummer en werd de eerste grote jazzsolist op de vibrafoon, een metalen slaginstrument met trillende tonen. In 1930 speelde hij in Los Angeles al vibrafoon op een plaat van Louis Armstrong. Benny Goodman hoorde hem in 1936 en nam hem op in zijn kwartet. Vanaf 1940 leidde Hampton een eigen bigband, die met Flying Home (1942) een hit had. De tenorsaxsolo van Illinois Jacquet op die plaat werd een voorbeeld voor de rhythm-and-blues. Hamptons band was luid en opzwepend en bleef tientallen jaren bestaan; veel jonge musici, onder wie Dinah Washington en Quincy Jones, begonnen erin.
