Teddy Wilson

Pianist Teddy Wilson, met Earl Hines en Art Tatum als voorbeelden, speelde in de jaren dertig de meest elegante pianostijl van de swing: lichte, heldere lijnen met de rechterhand en een rustige linkerhand. Hij werkte eerst bij Louis Armstrong en Benny Carter. Vanaf 1935 leidde hij voor producer John Hammond studiogroepen waarmee Billie Holiday haar eerste grote platen maakte. In hetzelfde jaar werd hij lid van het Benny Goodman Trio, met Goodman en drummer Gene Krupa. Hij was daarmee een van de eerste zwarte musici die openlijk in een gemengde groep voor een groot wit publiek speelde. Later leidde hij een eigen bigband en gaf hij les aan de Juilliard School.
