Teddy Wilson

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The pianist Teddy Wilson, with Earl Hines and Art Tatum as his examples, played the most elegant piano style of swing in the 1930s: light, clear lines with the right hand and a calm left hand. He first worked for Louis Armstrong and Benny Carter. From 1935 he led studio groups for the producer John Hammond with which Billie Holiday made her first great records. In the same year he became a member of the Benny Goodman Trio, with Goodman and the drummer Gene Krupa. In this way he was one of the first Black musicians to play openly in a mixed group for a large white audience. Later he led a big band of his own and taught at the Juilliard School.
