Gene Krupa
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The drummer Gene Krupa came from Chicago and became, in the swing years, the first drummer to be seen as a star. In 1927 he was one of the first to have the bass drum heard on a record. He played with Benny Goodman from 1934; his tom-toms in Sing, Sing, Sing made the drummer the centre of the stage. In 1938 he started his own big band, in which, from 1941, the singer Anita O'Day and the trumpeter Roy Eldridge performed. Eldridge was one of the first Black musicians to play regularly in a white big band. Krupa's playing was loud and theatrical, and he made the drum solo popular with a wide audience.
