Earl Hines

Pianist Earl Hines kwam uit de buurt van Pittsburgh en speelde vanaf 1925 in Chicago. In 1928 nam hij met Louis Armstrong de Hot Five-platen op; hun duet Weather Bird geldt als een hoogtepunt. Hines speelde met de rechterhand lijnen in octaven die klonken als een trompet, zodat ze boven een band uit kwamen. Daarom sprak men van zijn 'trumpet style'. Hij onderbrak de vaste stride-begeleiding van de linkerhand en speelde vrijer ritmisch. Vanaf 1928 leidde hij ruim tien jaar een bigband in de Grand Terrace in Chicago. Begin jaren veertig speelden Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie en Sarah Vaughan in zijn orkest. In de jaren zestig kreeg hij een tweede carrière als solist.
