Sarah Vaughan

Sarah Vaughan uit Newark won in 1942 een talentenjacht in het Apollo Theater. Ze zong in de bigband van Earl Hines, waar ook Dizzy Gillespie en Charlie Parker speelden, en noemde die twee later haar belangrijkste leraren. Ze nam de harmonie en de lijnen van de bebop op in haar zang. In 1945 maakte ze met Gillespie en Parker Lover Man. Haar stem had een enorm bereik, van diep tot heel hoog, en ze kon die laten klinken als een instrument. Haar bijnaam was 'Sassy' of 'The Divine One'. Haar album uit 1954 met trompettist Clifford Brown geldt als een hoogtepunt. Ze bleef tot eind jaren tachtig optreden.
